A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a cosmetic procedure designed to change the shape and position of your breasts for a more youthful appearance. As we age, changes in the body, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and gravity cause the ligaments that hold the breasts in place to stretch, causing a sagging appearance and in many cases, a loss of fullness. If this is a concern for you, you may benefit from a breast lift. During a breast lift, the plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and reposition the breasts higher on the chest, as well as repositioning the nipples and areola if necessary. There are several different types of mastopexy procedures; the one your surgeon chooses will depend on the size and shape of your breasts as well as other factors. While a breast lift won't change the size of your breasts, it's often done in conjunction with either a breast augmentation or reduction. Women who are in good health are typically good candidates for a breast lift procedure, if their breasts have finished developing. While you can usually still breastfeed children after a lift, you may consider waiting until you're done having children to have this procedure, since pregnancy may contribute to sagging breast and negate the results of this procedure. You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if your breasts have lost volume with age (gotten flatter and longer), sag substantially, have nipples that point downward or areolae that are stretched, or have one breast that is lower than the other is. This procedure usually lasts a lifetime; however, if you have substantially large breasts, you may consider also having a reduction, since the weight of the tissue can again cause the breasts to sag over time (even after having a lift). Many women choose to have a breast lift after having implants removed. The most common side effects of this procedure are scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and difficulty breastfeeding. You should avoid lifting anything heavy for several weeks, though most people can resume other activities within a few days. This procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
